Next, they cut individual mother of pearl shell pieces to the exact shape required and press each one firmly into its channel. They fill any gaps with orange-tinted resin and sand every surface completely flat. Finally, they apply a hard-wearing lacquer coat to protect the inlay for years of daily use. Because every step is entirely handmade, no two chests are ever identical.
